Hydrogen Rockets
In Year 10 & 11, I worked on a project to create hydrogen and oxygen powered rockets. It was an exciting experience that allowed me to explore the science behind rocket propulsion.
I created chemical reactions to generate the gases needed for propulsion.
The project taught me about the principles of chemistry and physics involved in rocket design and operation.
Workings of the project
I had to create the two gases (hydrogen and oxygen) and transfer them to the rocket itself for it to work
For the rockets, I used large pipette ends and filled these with water, which would be held in by surface tension.
The gases would then displace the water, getting ignited by a spark to create propulsion.
To create the oxygen, I used Yeast and Hydrogen Peroxide.
To create the hydrogen, I used Magnesium and Hydrochloric acid.
The pipette end was 1/3 filled with each component (water, hydrogen and oxygen).
When ignited, the gases would create a controlled explosion, propelling the rocket forward using the water.
Project Outcomes
Overall, the project was a great success, and I was able to create functional rockets that demonstrated the principles of rocket propulsion. It was a rewarding experience that allowed me to learn and grow while working on a project I was passionate about.
